There are several places in the New Testament where God tells us to be sober and think soberly.
Titus 2:6
Likewise, exhort the younger men to think soberly.
I Peter 4:7
Now the end of all things is drawing near. Therefore, think soberly and be sober in prayers.
I Peter 5:8-9
Be sober. Be watchful. Your adversary, the slandering devil, walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, being firm in the [right way of] believing, knowing that the same kinds of sufferings are being experienced by members of your brotherhood in the world.
One great benefit of being sober-minded is that it helps us to be alert and make the most of our time.
Ephesians 5:15-16
See to it then that you walk accurately, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil.
We want to redeem our time, make the most of the opportunities we have to do stuff for God in this short life. Being sober in our thinking helps us to do that.
